3/16/20 - 3/20/20: This is the seventh week of the third quarter.
Tuesday 3/17/20
Hello students and parents. I hope that you are all safe and well at home. As we all navigate through this unprecedented health crisis called COVID-19, I want to reassure you that the district and we teachers will be doing everything we can to ensure continuity of education. Although students are technically having snow days this week, I was hoping that you would visit a couple of websites that we plan to use for online instruction. First and foremost, I will continue to update this web-page often.
To begin with, the district plans to use an online learning platform called Canvas. Canvas is a central location where students can access posted assignments from all of their teachers. On Canvas, teachers can post lessons, assignments, and links to the many different websites that we use. The school district will be emailing all of us when it is ready to go. This should be very soon. In the meantime, you might want to google it, just to learn a little about it. From what I understand, it is very easy to use.
Some specific sites that we will be using (to begin with) for English 9 are as follows:
1. NewsELA: This is a wonderful site for reading comprehension and writing practice. If you could visit the site and create a student account, that would be wonderful. The link to the site is: https://newsela.com/
NewsELA Class Codes: OR Just Use the Appropriate Link Below:
Period 1: NJDDAN https://newsela.com/quickjoin/#/NJDDAN
Period 2: 5BMPAZ https://newsela.com/quickjoin/#/5BMPAZ
Period 5: QTYKVB https://newsela.com/quickjoin/#/QTYKVB
Period 7 Odd: XZ4GHA https://newsela.com/quickjoin/#/XZ4GHA
Period 7 Even: EEBDPD https://newsela.com/quickjoin/#/EEBDPD
Period 8: BYM8M4 https://newsela.com/quickjoin/#/BYM8M4
2. CommonLit: This is another great site for reading and writing practice. Please create an account for this site as well. The link to the site is: www.commonlit.org/en/enroll
Class Name Class Code
Period 1: B7LBPD
Period 2: 43GQ6D
Period 5: VDVEJZ
Period 7 Odd: 3ZG9KR
Period 7 Even: KZD9B3
Period 8: 5YGK36
In the meantime, these "Snow Days" would be a wonderful time for students to make up missing work for the third quarter. The parent portal is up and running, and students may check for missing work. I have listed some assignments for quarter 3 with links and documents directly below. Hopefully students will use this time to make up missing work for the third quarter so that we can continue learning new material next week.
1. & 2. We have had two text analysis essays recently. Some students are missing the text analysis essay for "Letter One," and some are missing the text analysis essay for "The Writer." Writing grades count heavily in English, so students should be sure to work on these essays first, if they are missing. *In the past three weeks, we had two text analysis essays. Students must hand in both.
Text Analysis assignment: text_analysis_essay_question.pdf
Text of "Letter One," by Rainer Maria Rilke: rilke_2018_letter_one_text_mrs._marrs_this_one.pdf
Text of "The Writer," by Richard Wilbur: rilke_2018_wilbur_the_writer_text_mrs._marrs.pdf
3. & 4. In addition, students have text-dependent questions for both non-fiction documents:
TDQ's for "Letter One": rilke_2018_revised_2018_-_letter_one_lessons_1-4_with_part_3_mrs._marrs.pdf
TDQ's for "The Writer": rilke_2018_wilbur_revised_2020_-the_writer_lessons_mrs._marrs.pdf
5. Some students are missing the outside reading assignment below. It counts for the third quarter.
*If students did this assignment, they may read and annotate the two remaining stories that they did not yet read :) Students will earn extra credit if they choose to read, annotate, and answer the questions for all four stories, instead of just two.
AIR #2 Assignment: air_2_new_2019_assignment_and_story_reviews.pdf
1. "After Twenty Years," by O. Henry: https://www.commonlit.org/en/texts/after-twenty-years
2. "The Last Leaf," by O. Henry: https://www.commonlit.org/en/texts/the-last-leaf
3. "The Interlopers," by Saki: https://www.commonlit.org/en/texts/the-interlopers
4. "The Necklace," by Guy De Mau Passant: https://www.commonlit.org/en/texts/the-necklaceP
Please try to stay safe, embrace your families, and remain Floyd Strong!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Marrs
